FSUPR & WMPRSA Speaker Series & Social

When: Friday, September 10 at 6 p.m.
Where: Holiday Inn, Big Rapids
Speaker: Curt McAllister, Toyota, Midwest PR Manager

Cost: $30 each, $50 for two, $22 for students,
Dinner is included.  A cash bar will be available.

Toyota in Crisis -
How Communications Helped an Automaker Transition from Recalls to Recovery

During the first half of 2010, the crisis facing Toyota dominated headlines and broadcasts around the world.  With more than 8 million vehicles recalled globally, the world's largest automaker saw its sterling reputation - painstakingly built over several decades - diminished in a matter of weeks. A company known for quality and reliability was now relegated to punch-line status. Yet, in light of harsh public scrutiny and intense criticism, the car company is still selling vehicles at a solid pace in the U.S.

Curt McAllister, Midwest Public Relations Manager at Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A., Inc., will discuss the events involved in this historic corporate crisis and how communications played a pivotal role in reaching out to vital internal and external audiences, at the height of media saturation.  He'll divulge how public relations helped assure the industry's most loyal customer base, and forge an even tighter bond between dealer and OEM.  McAllister will also discuss how transparency and executive availability played prominent roles in a nationwide media tour that hit dozens of major
and secondary markets across America.

McAllister will also talk about ongoing communications tools and tactics that keep employees, dealers and customers apprised of the company's activities, providing a sense of security and openness they've come to expect from Toyota.   McAllister is an alumnus of Ferris State University, and a graduate of the Public Relations program.

RSVP by Wednesday, September 1 by mailing your name and check to: FSUPR, Patrick Bishop, COB 320, 119 South St, Big Rapids, MI 49307

Checks may be made out to FSU PRSSA.

Please email Patrick Bishop with any questions about the event.

AKRON CHAPTER
How To Succeed in a New Economy
Kent State University to hold four-part PR series about post-recession communications

Citing the need for companies and agencies to work smarter and harder in a world with smaller budgets, reduced staffs and stripped-down resources, Kent State University’s School of Journalism and Mass Communication has announced a four-part public relations series devoted to the strategies market leaders are using to succeed in a new economy.

Titled “Post Recession Communications: Facing the New Realities,” the series will feature speakers from across the country, including representatives from IBM, Ford Motor Company, Prime Research North America, Diebold, Internet Strategies Group and public relations firms APCO Worldwide, Edelman, Dix & Eaton, Fahlgren Mortine and Morgan & Myers. Several Kent State faculty members will participate as well. The series will focus on four themes over four separate days:
  • “Create the Authentic Enterprise,” a full-day seminar to be held September 24 on Kent’s main campus devoted to an exploration of the ways communications have helped companies define and instill their unique values internally and externally while building and maintaining stakeholder relationships.
  • “Maximize Your Communications ROI,” a 90-minute webinar scheduled for October 6 that provides an executive overview of the various research tools now being used to demonstrate the value of public relations to the C-suite.
  • “Leverage the Power of Technology in Your Communications Program, “ a second 90-minute webinar to take place October 20 that looks at the spectrum of new media tools now in widespread use and the ways communications professionals can engage their top management in using them effectively.
  • “Earn Trust,” a full-day seminar to be held October 29 on Kent’s main campus that presents a series of speakers who have used communications to build organizational trust both internally and externally.

The East Central District of the Public Relations Society of America, as well as the Greater Cleveland Chapter and the Akron Area Chapter of PRSA, are co-sponsors for the series. It is being produced for Kent State University’s School of Communication by Meeker-Young LLC, a consulting firm that serves as communications coaches and advisors to leaders.

Jeff Fruit, director of journalism and mass communication at Kent State University said, “This series of four sessions addresses key communications issues facing organizations as they try to grow and succeed in today’s challenging environment. We are pleased to be a partner in offering this program.” The series will help Kent State’s School of Journalism and Mass Communication fund scholarships and develop new programming at the school, he said.

Davis Young, co-founder and senior facilitator at Meeker-Young added, “Our goal is to provide a world-class program in this region that requires neither expensive travel and lodging, nor extensive time away from the office. We know our colleagues have tight training budgets and we think this series will provide an extraordinary value. Anyone involved in setting communications strategy for an organization – or carrying it out – will get a tremendous amount of insight from these sessions.”

Participants can register for the entire series, or select individual sessions. For more information, visit www.myprseries.com, or contact davis@meekeryoung.com.
